Beware of new ATO tax scams

Tax season brings out a number of new scams each year and this year is no exception. The ATO is reporting several myGov-related SMS and ATO email scams against unsuspecting Australians.

Although the ATO does use email and text notifications when there are new messages in your myGov inbox, there is one major difference. These messages will never include a link to log on to your myGov account.

You should never click any links contained within these scam messages. Instead, you should always access the ATO’s online services directly via either the myGov website, the ATO website or the ATO app.

Make accessing your myGov account more secure by opting to receive a security code via SMS. It’s a quick and secure way to sign in to access ATO online services and you can help minimise your exposure to scam messages.

If you receive an SMS or email from the ATO that you think may be a scam, report it to: reportemailfraud@ato.gov.au.

If you think you’ve received a scam text or email from myGov, report it to: reportascam@servicesaustralia.gov.au.

As always, feel free to get in touch and we can provide you with further advice.
